The Europe Fund {how it all started}

Posted by in Europe

Note: I’m headed home today from LAX with the kiddos. Josh is staying in SoCal for some surfing with some friends. Wish me luck on the 3 1/2 hour flight! Disney Cruise posts are coming soon!!

A year ago or so, Josh said he wanted to pack up our stuff and our kids and travel indefinitely. He had grand ideas of traveling the world and taking pictures. I love him, but sometimes he goes a little overboard. But I have a theory here… I think he comes up with these crazy outrageous plans so that when we stumble upon something that’s doable, I’ll go along with it.

And that’s how it started. Then, a few months ago, he sent me a link to an article on this amazing family travel blog. I read that article and then spent the next two and a half hours reading post after post on this blog. The next day, I casually mentioned to Josh that I was “about 20% sold on the idea of going to Europe for several months” instead of the two-three weeks we had been talking about.

As is usually the case with us, we discussed traveling to Europe non-stop for about two weeks. Finally, I looked at him and I said “we just have to do this.” You see, I don’t want to spend my life dreaming up awesome things that we COULD do. I want to spend my life dreaming up awesome things and then DO them. And, we’ve also been given a unique opportunity. Because we are wedding and family photographers, we can make money anywhere. We’re not tied down to one location. And, we live in the midwest. And it’s COLD here during the winter. We rarely shoot winter weddings.

So, we’ve got a plan. Spring 2016, we’re packing up our stuff and packing up our kiddos and we’re heading straight for Paris. I don’t know how long we’ll be gone. It depends on how wedding season shakes out. I imagine we’ll be back sometime in April. There are SO many things to plan for… homeschooling the kids, leasing a car, finding places to stay, deciding where we want to go and what we want to see, finding people to photograph, finding someone to rent our house while we’re gone… and the list goes ON…

And for now, I’m just compiling that list. And talking about Europe. And thinking about Europe. And getting excited for Europe. Of course, with a trip like this, we’ve got to do some major saving. We’ve already instituted The Europe Fund. And we’ve been stashing our dollars away into it and the kids have been excitedly shoving their allowance into it. So, that’s our plan for now. I’ll continue to share the steps in this journey along the way and of course you can bet we’ll be blogging a lot from Europe when we get there!
